About The Garden

The Cavell Park Community Garden is located in Cavell Park, at the end of Cavell Avenue, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

How It Started

A small group of residents in the St. John's Signal Hill/Battery/Quidi Vidi Road/Forest Road/Quidi Village Area dreamed and talked about starting a community garden in the neighbourhood. After much thoughtful planning, they approached The City of St. John's parks department about building a community garden on unused park land. In the spring of 2012, The Cavell Park Community Garden opened in the park at the end of Cavell Avenue, off of Quidi Vidi Road in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Where We are Today

There's a garden growing at the foot of Signal Hill, by a passionate group committed to creating a space in which to grow organic food, to be physically active and to develop a sense of community. We are building community around a common purpose: the growing of our own safe and healthy food. By growing organic vegetables safely in our neighbourhood, we are raising the quality of life for ourselves and for our community.

Today we have approximately 40 raised beds including 4 specially designed table height beds for adults with limited mobility. Most of the beds are rented on an annual basis to individuals or families who wish to have their own space. We also have a couple communal beds that we work on together as a team to seed, grow and harvest.

Because the garden is located in the downtown area which is known to have soil contamination issues, we built raised beds with fresh safe soil to ensure food security. We make our own compost and collect rainwater in barrels for watering crops. The garden is a friendly place to visit and learn about how to grow good food in downtown St. John's.

The Future

We intend to hold workshops on raised-bed gardening, composting, and other urban gardening topics, as well as seed swaps and other events open to the public. We want the impact of our garden to reach beyond its membership list.

How You Can Help

You have the opportunity to play a significant part in our garden’s success by supporting us now when we need it most. Our garden requires additional resources to continue to grow: this includes funds for a new shed and greenhouse, additional water barrels, tools, seeds and soil. We cannot do this without your support. Your contribution is crucial to helping us continue. Our garden revitalizes an underused space and promotes the sharing of knowledge about growing and eating healthy food in urban areas...and we want you to be a part of this exciting adventure!
